The Waveborn Blog http://blog.waveborn.com Buy some shades, give some glasses. posterous.com Wed, 07 Dec 2011 10:00:00 -0800 Feature: Our Partner, Unite for Sight http://blog.waveborn.com/feature-our-partner-unite-for-sight http://blog.waveborn.com/feature-our-partner-unite-for-sight

What makes Waveborn stand out in the fashion world is its altruistic corporate mission.  For every pair of sunglasses purchased, we give a pair of eyeglasses away to some in need.  But how do we accomplish that mission? Our team is in the process of designing an infographic to highlight our operation, but until then... read about our partner, Unite for Sight.

Unite for Sight is a non-profit dedicated to providing quality healthcare to local eye clinics all around the world.  By investing human and financial resources, Unite for Sight is able to assist local clinics in their goal to eradicate preventable blindness.  As a result,  local eye doctors in remote villages are able to bring eye care to their patients each day.  So far, Unite for Sight has assisted more than 1.2 million people, including over 43,000 vision-restoring surgeries.

Unite for Sight's volunteers, or Global Impact Fellows, support and assist local eye clinics and their opthalmic staff.  We've included a short video highlighting the trip two Fellows took to Chennai, India, and the amazing work they were able to do there.

In case you don't know, Ultimate can be defined as a sport similar to rugby or football - the goal is to get the disc to your target, or "endzone."

Waveborn was recently featured by Skyd Magazine, one of the biggest sources for ultimate news on the web.  We are proud to share with you this article by one of our own at the Waveborn team.  Check out his winter gear recommendations for new players -- and don't forget to check out "Turn Your Swag On" where Waveborn makes an appearance!

And remember, even if you don't play, you can still rock Waveborn shades - the ultimate sunglasses for looking cool and giving back.

Wed, 16 Nov 2011 09:00:00 -0800 3 Great Reasons to Rock Waveborn Shades in the Winter http://blog.waveborn.com/3-great-reasons-to-rock-waveborn-shades-in-th http://blog.waveborn.com/3-great-reasons-to-rock-waveborn-shades-in-th
When we think about sunglasses, we conjure up images of sunny skies and sandy beaches.  While summer is definitely the most popular time to rock shades, optometrists report that sunglasses are a daily requirement.  No ifs, ands, or buts.

Just because the sun might be hiding doesn’t mean you are more protected.  Winter sun sits lower in the sky at a different angle, and as a result can emit   even stronger rays.  Combine this lower sun with the glare and mirror effect of snow, and you’ve got yourself a potentially harmful situation. This can cause snow blindness--which anyone who has ever driven in winter can tell you about.

Winter rays are just as strong--and dangerous--as summer rays.  In addition to reducing glare and protecting against UV exposure, sunglasses in winter months also reduce dryness, squinting, and general discomfort.
To sum it up, here are three great reasons to rock Waveborn shades in the winter months:
1.  Reduce glare and protect against harmful UV rays-- 365 days of the year
2.  Protect against wind, dryness, dust, and other irritating debris
3.  Good karma! By purchasing a pair of Waveborn shades, you can reduce eye problems for yourself and another person through a donation of prescription glasses

So make sure to protect your eyes this winter with a pair of Waveborn shades!

Fri, 11 Nov 2011 09:00:00 -0800 Meet the Interns: Rebekah http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-rebekah http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-rebekah
For our last post in the meet the interns series, meet Rebekah! After graduating from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Agricultural Communications, Rebekah wasn’t sure what challenge she and her high heels should take on next. A few months later, she landed the perfect gig as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Tennessee where she is currently working on her thesis on 4-H and social media.  She loves working with Waveborn, where it’s totally okay to be a shady person! Her thoughts on Waveborn’s products: “Doing good has never looked this great!”

What is it about the company or the movement that led you to apply to intern at Waveborn?

I love the BOGO (Buy One, Give One) model that lots of companies are starting to incorporate. It is a way that people can help out while still purchasing things that they actually need as well. Waveborn caught my attention because they are  a very new company and I had the opportunity to be involved with building a community of customers who are passionate about helping in the fight against preventable blindness!

Beka_waveborn_photo

What do you do when you're not working for Waveborn?

I’m a graduate teaching assistant, so I work with recruitment, write lesson plans, teach and grade papers. I spend my spare time working on my graduate thesis project and watching The Vampire Diaries.

Best thing about where you are from:

Where I come from, life is pretty much the embodiment of a Luke Bryan or  Brantley Gilbert song. (Those are country music artists, by the way.) The best food is always what your grandmother cooks, we go to church every Sunday and the only way to get to my house is down a dirt road. It’s the center of small town, country life, but I loved growing up there. While in graduate school, I live in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I can definitely say I will miss the mall and the nearby grocery store when I go home!

Your top three films... go!

How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, Pride and Prejudice and Australia

Dream vacation?
Since I was 5 years old, I have wanted to spend a few weeks in Australia. I wanted to visit the Australian Outback and see what rural life was like, and not just visit the popular tourist locations. I think that if I ever had to move to another country it would definitely be Australia. Besides, who wouldn’t want a Kangaroo for a pet?

What's your favorite book?

Emma by Jane Austen

Who is one band/musical artist that you love and think everyone should know about?

I LOVE Lady Antebellum! I’m super excited to see them in concert in few weeks and finally get to see them live! I think that what makes them my current favorite is the fact that they harmonize so well, but they also do songs that sound like duets or have a an obvious male/female lead. If you haven’t heard their new CD Own The Night, you should definitely check it out!

What is a perfect Saturday for you?

The perfect Saturday is when I get to sleep in past 10 a.m. Graduate school classes, a teaching assistantship, my Waveborn internship and keeping up with all the other stuff I am involved with can be a full time job. I love Saturdays when I can just sleep all day or lay in the bed watching TV show re-runs or movie adaptations of Jane Austen books.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I have the best brothers and sister anyone could ask for, the coolest friends on the planet, and I collect chicken figurines. Random, I know, but you asked!

What can fans do to help spread the word about Waveborn?

I think that one of the best ways to show your support is to buy a pair of shades and wear them. Whenever someone asks about them, tell them the Waveborn story.  You can also help us build the Waveborn community by liking us on Facebook or following us on Twitter! Send us pictures of yourself wearing Waveborn shades or pin your favorite pair to your holiday wishlist on Pinterest. The best way to spread the word is to talk about it to your friends, your family, that guy that sits beside you on the bus, etc. Keep talking about us!

Want to reach out to Rebekah? We don't blame you, she's awesome! Get at her in the blog comments or @beka_dawn.  She might love vampires but she won't bite, we promise.

If you missed the beginning of the Meet the Interns series, don't fret! Find them all here.

Mon, 07 Nov 2011 09:00:00 -0800 Meet the Interns: Lenise http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-lenise http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-lenise

The third intern in our Meet the Interns series is Lenise Phillips. She recently graduated from Virginia Tech with degrees in English and French, and just like Ashley spends a ton of time watching How I Met Your Mother and making loads of baked goods. She's having way too much fun interning with Waveborn, where she gets the opportunity to work with some amazing folks doing even more amazing things.

What is it about the company or the movement that led you to apply to intern at Waveborn?

It was the job title that caught my eye first. Jonathan had posted this internship under the esteemed title of "Social Media Junkie Intern." I knew that any company that had a sense of humor and encouraged a social media addiction would be the best kind to work for. But the deal wasn't sealed until I read about Waveborn's fantastic vision of paying it forward one pair of sunglasses at a time - I knew then that Waveborn was a movement I wanted to be a part of.

Lenise

What do you do when you're not working for Waveborn?

I teach gymnastics classes to kids as young as 2 and as old as 12. Unfortunately I have to play the part of responsible adult in this situation, so I only get to play on the equipment when my kiddies aren't looking. I get to wear a t-shirt and shorts to work every day though, so I can't complain. Except when the kids get crazy legs and kick me in the face. Then I might complain a bit.

Best thing about where you are from:

Technically, I'm from Montclair, VA, a suburb about 25 miles south of DC. But I recently left my heart in southwest VA where I graduated from Virginia Tech this past May. I couldn't pick just one awesome thing to say about that beautiful region, so here are three:

1. Jumping up and down to 'Enter Sandman' by Metallica as the Hokie Football Team runs onto the field in Lane Stadium. You will never hear a noise as beautiful as this one.
2. Hiking McAfee's Knob. It's a 7 mile hike round-trip, and you may not be able to feel your legs afterwards, but the view you'll get of the Blue Ridge Mountains once you make it to the top will literally steal the breath from your lungs. And it won't be because of the exertion.
3. Eating at the Homeplace after hiking McAfee's Knob. Just a few miles down the road, it's an old farmhouse that's been converted to a family style restaurant that serves bottomless lemonade, fried chicken, ham, roast beef, green beans, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and cobbler for a flat rate of $13! It'll be the best meal of your life.

Your top three films... go!

Hands down, my favorite film is I Love You, Man. I have a knack for getting myself into awkward situations and a huge crush on Paul Rudd, so I feel like this one is self-explanatory. Next, I'd say The Man in the Iron Mask and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Dream vacation?
Antarctica. I know it sounds strange, but I really want to visit all 7 continents before I die. And since Antarctica isn't exactly a hop skip and a jump away, I'd love to have someone plan this out for me. I also really, really want to play with some wild penguins.

What's your favorite book?

I have seven. And they all have a boy wizard by the name of Harry in common. What can I say? He's charming.

Who is one band/musical artist that you love and think everyone should know about?

Carbon Leaf. They're from Richmond, and their music is an eclectic mashup of alt-country, indie rock, bluegrass, and Celtic. It shouldn't work, but it does, I promise. Listen to "What About Everything" and "Life Less Ordinary."

What is a perfect Saturday for you?

My Perfect Saturday starts with eating as many chocolate chip pancakes as I can manage. And then I'd watch movies for the rest of the afternoon, and maybe go for a run in the evening. And to top it off, my friends would come over in the evening and we'd cook a big meal together, preferably something no one's tried to cook before. Culinary experiments usually make for the best memories.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I am a fountain of useless facts thanks to my obsession with drinking Snapple. Apparently, a Venus Flytrap can eat an entire cheeseburger. Snapple Fact #880.

What can fans do to help spread the word about Waveborn?

Besides friending us on Facebook and following us on Twitter, you can subscribe to our newsletter to get updates on our movement and be the first to hear about contests, promotions and giveaways. But the best thing you can do is get your hands on a pair of our shades and let your eyes do the talking.

Person who would best rock a pair of Waveborn shades?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I think these shades could have bought him 500 more days with Summer.

Tue, 01 Nov 2011 13:17:00 -0700 Meet the Interns: Fiona http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-fiona http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-fiona
Our next intern in the series, Fiona Giblin, comes to us straight from the Big Easy. When she's not finishing her degree in Criminal Justice and Mass Communication, she loves traveling, shopping, art, and design.  Read more to find out how she's helping NOLA soak up the sun in Waveborn shades!

What is it about the company or the movement that led you to apply to intern at Waveborn?

I absolutely love sunglasses and currently have about 12 pairs of different styles and types I have collected over the years. When I learned about the cause and how Waveborn donates a pair of eyeglasses to someone who is visually impaired and in need, I became even more interested. I am fortunate enough to have perfect vision and can't even imagine not being able to see the beautiful world around us. Once I started researching through the Unite for Sight website I thought it was amazing to learn that about 80% of blindness can be cured. I love social media as well and thought it would be a great opportunity for me to try and contribute what I know and love to a good cause.

Fiona

What do you do when you're not working for Waveborn?

When I am not interning for Waveborn, I am in school finishing up my last semester at Loyola University in New Orleans. I am a criminal justice major and am currently taking my last 4 core classes. My minor is mass communication and I have a focus in advertising, which is where I developed my love for social media.  When I have a break from studying I have been trying to explore New Orleans as much as possible and take in their wonderful culture in my last few months living here. I plan to move back home to Maryland in December and start my "grown up" career somewhere.

Best thing about where you are from:

One great thing I love about Maryland is Maryland Blue Crabs. I love having crab fests in the summer with my friends and family.

Your top three films... go!

Jerry McGuire - a classic
Gigantic - I love Independent films
Into the Wild - I love Emile Hirsch

Dream vacation?

I would love to visit The Maldives. The beaches look beautiful!

What's your favorite book?

The Great Gatsby. I absolutely love the 20s era, so much so that I have been a 20s flapper girl for Halloween for the past 3 years!

Who is one band/musical artist that you love and think everyone should know about?

My music interests change pretty much daily depending on my mood, but right now I am in love with this song called "Coffee Break" by Zeds Dead. If you like dubstep you should check it out!

What is a perfect Saturday for you?

A perfect Saturday would include sleeping in, having a great brunch, meeting up with friends at the Fly. (The Fly is a park in NOLA that overlooks the Mississippi River and has beautiful views and big grassy areas, perfect for laying out and tanning with friends.) Maybe doing some shopping on Magazine Street, heading to dinner and maybe going out for a few drinks.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I consider myself to be a creative person and I love art and making/designing new and interesting pieces. It's one of my favorite things to do when I have free time.

What can fans do to help spread the word about Waveborn?

Fans can help spread the word about Waveborn by "liking" our FB page and sharing it on their own wall or on another form of social media. They can also just talk about it with their friends and family and try to get the word out there. Also- purchasing a pair of Waveborn shades and letting them speak for themselves when wearing them!

Wed, 26 Oct 2011 12:14:00 -0700 Meet the Interns: Ashley http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-ashley http://blog.waveborn.com/meet-the-interns-ashley

Our first intern in the MTI installment (that's Meet the Interns if you've been slacking) is Ashley Ozery.  A recent International Relations grad of Lehigh University, she is loving interning for Waveborn as it continues the work she left behind in school.  Furthering social good with a fashionable flair--who wouldn't love it?

What is it about the company or the movement that led you to apply to intern at Waveborn?
When I first head about Waveborn, I thought it was a great idea.  I loved the combination of fashion and social good.  Helping others gain the right to sight is an amazing mission, and I love being a part of that.

Ashley

What do you do when you're not working for Waveborn?
Right now, I am gearing up for my big move in four months... to South Korea! I will be teaching English for a year and couldn’t be more excited.  Until then, I have been baking up a storm and trying to finally watch every episode of How I Met Your Mother.

Best thing about where you are from:
I spend my time divided between central NJ and the DC area.  In NJ, it’s great to have the beach so close, tons of diners, and easy access to NYC.  In DC, there are so many fantastic restaurants and places to visit - a lot of them free!

Your top three films... go!

This is a toughie for sure... I’ll always be sweet on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Matthew Broderick, if you’re reading this, DM me on Twitter).  Others would have to include Mean Girls and The Count of Monte Cristo... random I know but they are all great!

Dream vacation?
My dream vacation would take me to a place completely unlike where I am from.  Little to no English, adventurous food choices, and beautiful places to visit.  I change my mind all the time, but right now I am thinking Vietnam.  It looks gorgeous!

What's your favorite book?
This might sound a little lame, but my favorite book is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.  I’ve probably read it fifteen times or so... it’s a great story.  Runner-up might have to be A Little Princess, by the same author.  Way better than the movie!

Who is one band/musical artist that you love and think everyone should know about?
Neutral Milk Hotel.  They’re indie, awesome, and already broken-up... but still worth a listen.

What is a perfect Saturday for you?
It would definitely start with brunch (I love brunch).  Maybe I’d check out a new movie or museum with some friends.  Afterwards, we’d all get Thai food for dinner.  If you can’t tell by now, food is a big theme with me...

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?
I’m currently trying to perfect the recipe for a homemade pumpkin spice latte.  If you know the answer, let me know in the comments!!

What can fans do to help spread the word about Waveborn?
Waveborn fans can help spread the news by joining our community on Facebook, following @Waveborn on Twitter,  and reading the blog. By interacting with Waveborn online, fans can learn more about Waveborn’s mission so they can tell their friends.

If you want to hear more from Ashley, leave a comment or check out her Twitter @ashleyincognito.  Matthew Broderick, this means you.

Wed, 12 Oct 2011 09:04:00 -0700 World Sight Day 2011: Because Sight is a Right http://blog.waveborn.com/world-sight-day-2011-because-sight-is-a-right http://blog.waveborn.com/world-sight-day-2011-because-sight-is-a-right

Since 2000, every second Thursday in October is World Sight Day.  This year it is tomorrow, October 13th.  World Sight Day is part of VISION 2020, a global organization whose main initiative is the elimination of avoidable blindness.  Waveborn is 100% behind this cause, and so we have decided to highlight World Sight Day and promote the advocacy within.  Waveborn creates cool shades, but let's not forget the real issues - eliminating and ending problems related to sight.

Worldsightday

With every pair of Waveborn shades sold, we normally donate a pair of eyeglasses to someone in need. To promote World Sight Day and the cause, we are doubling that proposition and donating two pairs of eyeglasses with each purchase through the month of October.

We're very proud to be a part of this movement. Very often, people in the developing world are living in extreme poverty, and often have no resources or finances to correct their vision. We're hoping to change this, one person at a time.

So remember--this World Sight Day, get involved! Spread the word, read more at Vision2020.org, or buy a pair of Waveborn shades. Giving never felt so good.

Thu, 15 Sep 2011 07:30:00 -0700 "When you incorporate giving, your customers are your best marketers." http://blog.waveborn.com/when-you-incorporate-giving-your-customers-ar http://blog.waveborn.com/when-you-incorporate-giving-your-customers-ar

When approaching the pioneer in this "one for one" movement -- they do have the phrase trademarked, by the way --- what was our CEO supposed to say?

Last night, at a presentation in downtown DC by TOMS Founder and Chief Shoe Giver, Blake Mycoskie, Jonathan met and told him about Waveborn. After Blake's talk, he was signing his new book, Start Something that Matters (he told the audience it just became #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list). During the book signing, Jonathan approached the table, introduced himself and said, "Thanks so much for the presentation, I actually recently started a sunglasses line with a giving component." Blake responded with, "Cool. Do you have a card? I'd love to check it out."

And just like that, we're officially on the TOMS radar! His presentation was thoughtful and informative, explaining the background of TOMS' launch and success. He put himself in a position to succeed, caught a ton of lucky breaks, and with his ingenuity and creativity, has really pioneered this one for one movement. He deserves a ton of credit for building the business he has, and paving the path for others.

He also discussed the importance of giving in every type of business. Whether you call it charity or philanthropy or volunteerism, there are countless ways to have an impact through business. And as he mentioned, "When you incorporate giving, your customers are your best marketers."

So wear your shades proudly, and tell the story of giving.

Thank you for being our best marketers.

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to be featured on Thrillist.com. This piece was sent out to their DC members, and the next week a shorter blurb sent out to their NY list.

At this stage in the game, any press is great, and we were lucky they said some nice things! Thrillist called us “sleek, moderately-priced” and said “the Italian-made shades themselves look like slightly sportier versions of Ray-Ban’s classic Wayfarer design.”

Press is a big deal as we try to get the word out to more and more people. We'll continue our press outreach efforts in both print and online media, and other creative outlets. And if we do some things right, hopefuly this Thrillist article will be just the first of many nice things people say about us.

So, thank you Thrillist for getting the ball rolling. We appreciate it.

One year later, Waveborn is real.

Tons more to follow. How we got here, who has helped along the way, new colors we're adding, how we're helping abroad, and so much more.

But for now, let's get this site and this company and this brand out the door. Let's take off the training wheels and see how she flies.

Join us.
