How Do Polarized Lenses Work?
Ophthalmologist Dr. Mike Korchak Says: Polarized lenses are designed to reduce glare (you know, that annoying blinding effect). Glare can happen for many reasons, but usually it’s caused by the reflection and/or scattering of sunlight off of surfaces like water or glass windshields (e.g., think about hanging out at the beach or driving around with the top down). Non-polarized sunglasses reduce the intensity of all light, but polarized sunglasses can selectively eliminate the light that causes glare. The physics behind it is complicated, but if you must know... here is a simplified way to think about it.

We view the world by interpreting how light bounces off of objects (our eye collects the light and our brain processes it). Light comes from the sun and it is a wave. The physics behind waves is complicated but let’s think of it like this. Essentially, it travels in a squiggly line from point A to point B like this: A ~~~~~~~~~~~~ B. The sum of that wave is essentially a line like this: A ---------> B, but we can’t really ignore the squiggles. The squiggles affect how our eye interprets images and the squiggles are what is meant by “polarization”. To make it more complicated, the squiggles can be rotated around 360 degrees, which changes the wave’s properties even though it is still going in the same direction. We experience more glare when receive light with different orientations of the squiggles (i.e., different amounts of polarization).
Luckily for us, the light from the sun will illuminate objects and send waves in a single polarization (i.e., squiggles all aligned in the same plane) and we will have no glare. BUT, when the light from the sun is also bouncing off other objects (i.e., water or car windshields), the light is no longer perfectly polarized and it causes glare. That is where Waveborn Polarized Sunglasses come in. The polarized sunglasses have a special property that only allow one orientation of squiggly lines through. They block out all the unnecessary light waves that would cause glare!

So what are polarized lenses good for? Everything really, but they're particularly useful on bright sunny days when you’re playing sports, hanging out near the water, or driving around in a sweet pair of shades.
