DC Based Waveborn Sunglasses Blasts Through Indiegogo Goal

Washington DC, June 10—DC based social startup, Waveborn Sunglasses, has surpassed it’s
$10,000 crowdfunding campaign goal by over 200%. After earning the initial $10,000 in less than 36
hours, the campaign surged to an outstanding $20,700-- selling to 10 countries and 28 states. This all
means Waveborn will be able to give over 250 pairs of glasses to those who need them most.
What makes this even more special is Waveborn is a new breed of company—the compassionate
capitalist. Working with non-profits Unite for Sight and SEE International, Waveborn promises to give
a pair of regular glasses to those in need. This buy one give one model has given Waveborn the
moniker “The TOMS Shoes of Ophthalmology.”

Crowdfunding has become the go to for innovative and nimble startups to pre-sell their wares in an
international online bazaar. If the company combines a premium product and 21st century marketing,
they can beat the odds stacked against every new startup without giving shares to angel funds or
venture capitalists.

CEO Mike Malloy, Boston College ('08) and Georgetown ('12) alum, talks about what it was like on
Day One of the campaign and how it feels to be an emerging leader in the social entrepreneur scene:
