DC Based Waveborn Sunglasses Blasts Through Indiegogo Goal

Washington DC, June 10—DC based social startup, Waveborn Sunglasses, has surpassed it’s
$10,000 crowdfunding campaign goal by over 200%. After earning the initial $10,000 in less than 36
hours, the campaign surged to an outstanding $20,700-- selling to 10 countries and 28 states. This all
means Waveborn will be able to give over 250 pairs of glasses to those who need them most.
What makes this even more special is Waveborn is a new breed of company—the compassionate
capitalist. Working with non-profits Unite for Sight and SEE International, Waveborn promises to give
a pair of regular glasses to those in need. This buy one give one model has given Waveborn the
moniker “The TOMS Shoes of Ophthalmology.”

Crowdfunding has become the go to for innovative and nimble startups to pre-sell their wares in an
international online bazaar. If the company combines a premium product and 21st century marketing,
they can beat the odds stacked against every new startup without giving shares to angel funds or
venture capitalists.

CEO Mike Malloy, Boston College ('08) and Georgetown ('12) alum, talks about what it was like on
Day One of the campaign and how it feels to be an emerging leader in the social entrepreneur scene:
“It was an incredible feeling on Day One as we watched the campaign backers continue to pour in and
support our mission. We are incredibly thankful for all our backers who have shown their support for
Waveborn and spread our story to their friends and families. The campaign solidified what we already
knew: there is a huge market for designer Italian sunglasses that do more than alleviate the sun's

“Social entrepreneurship is the future of business and is changing how people view work and their
career. Why can’t a company make money and give back to the world? At Waveborn, we leverage our
ever growing community (now over 100+ brand ambassadors) to spread the Waveborn movement and
teach social entrepreneurship to anyone who wants to learn. We strive to tell others about the two
great charities, Unite for Sight and SEE International, that we partner with, and how they can have an
impact. Customers can make a difference without even changing their spending habits. They were
going to get new sunglasses anyway, why not buy a premium product AND give the gift of sight.”

About Waveborn
Waveborn sunglasses are designed and handcrafted in Italy, and we sell them at a price point well
below typical designer brands. For each pair of sunglasses sold, Waveborn helps a person in need in
one of two ways: a) we provide a new pair of prescription eyeglasses through our nonprofit partner
Unite for Sight, or b) we fund a portion of a vision-restoring cataract surgery for a person in need
though our new nonprofit partner Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International.
