(CA skim sessions)

This is a long over due skim sessions after 3 weeks of silence while I focused on editing and publishing my first book, Becoming So Good They Can't Ignore You. I'm back in DC now. The Ravens won the Super Bowl. My car got broken into my first day back at the office, but it doesn't matter because the Ravens won the Super Bowl. Tremendous amount of growth and progress with Waveborn coming out of CA. Here's a synopsis of the whole trip:

I just returned from a month long sales/investment trip down the coast of CA, and I wanted to share a brief life update. I started the trip with a week in San Francisco to meet with some angel investors and VC firms. Next, I spent three days in Palo Alto, which included visits to the Facebook campus and Stanford's StartX accelerator/incubator program. I received a very generous invitation from StartX to spend the summer at Stanford and run Waveborn full-time from the west coast. However, I think I am going to decline it because of my strong roots here in DC with family and friends, as well as my commitment to run PunchRock and Waveborn. I spent an entire day driving down the coast and took lots of videos and pictures of the beautiful scenery on the Pacific Ocean. I am putting together a short video compilation that we will be using for a Waveborn kickstarter campaign next month to generate pre-orders for our new styles with polarized lenses this spring.

In Santa Barbara, I met with the CEO of SEE (Surgical Eye Expeditions) International, another non-profit that sends doctors across the globe to perform 100+ cataract surgeries in 2-3 days. As Waveborn continues to grow, we are excited to expand our social good component by working with a full spectrum of sight restoring agencies. I competed in a beach ultimate frisbee tournament in Santa Monica with 150+ teams from across the country, and Waveborn is working on some big partnership deals within the ultimate community. A friend of mine from Boston College went skiing in Aspen for a week and gave me his car and house in Newport Beach for the week, which was located 100 yards from the beach. Not a bad place to work from "home." I met with buyers at a variety of surf shops and retail stores in the Huntington, Newport, and Laguna Beach areas. We are also talking with buyers at university bookstores, including USC. We are excited to launch our new product lines in retail stores in southern CA and across the country.

I had to cut my trip short by a week in order to fly home to watch the Ravens win the Super Bowl with my family. I still can't believe the Ravens won the Super Bowl - it was incredible! However, I got to spend 36 hours in San Diego to recruit some sales reps to reach out to stores in SD. I also had a nice connection from SXSW last year who got me onto a party bus with free bottle service at a downtown club in SD for an Absolut sponsored party - it was pretty cool. I managed to spend the entire trip staying with friends for free and making lots of great personal and business connections.

While co-working down the coast, I was able to put the finishing touches on my first book, Becoming So Good They Can't Ignore You. The book highlights my first 4.5 years of professional experience and teaches you how to adopt the Craftsman Mindset to find work you love. I've attached the cover for your reference, which summarizes the key themes of the book. It took me 5+ months to write/edit/design the book, and I'm ecstatic to finally finish the project and publish the book. I would be honored if you would read it and let me know what you think, as well as share it with any other colleagues, friends, or family members who may enjoy it. All in all, the trip was a monumental success and fairly life changing for me and my businesses. I am excited for what the future holds. I'm going to try and get back in the habit of posting these skim sessions on a much more regular basis now that my book is finished. It's gotten 100+ downloads already, and I'm excited to see it spread via the interwebz and word of mouth. Read it. And then tell your friends how awesome it is.
